About

Chimski is a literary magazine for lovers of words and wisdom, addressed to the great variety of readers.

We offer articles on literature, philosophy, history, mathematics, education, the mass media, and commentary on politics and popular culture. We also publish stories and poetry, including song lyrics.

Our contributors, though anonymous, write in a collective voice to promote the following to the general public: the arts, the humanities, public education, literacy, civic responsibility, lifelong learning, reading of the classics, especially Plato and Shakespeare, to whom the founding of Chimski owe much of its inspiration.

Submissions

Why send us your work? It is not a very good deal: there is no pay and your name will not appear next to your the piece. Chimski believes that the vanity of authorship and financial gain get in the way of making any genuine expression of love for words and wisdom. As Plato have argued, the true artist does not think about her art in relation to wages: art is done for the sake thereof, and collateral rewards that follow are of secondary consideration, if at all. The contributors of Chimski submit under these conditions. (The funds that we raise for the moment go solely into operational costs.)

Therefore, the pleasure you take from the work you do is the best we can offer you. However, if we publish your piece, we will add you to our list of contributors. We will not deny your claim of authorship, should you choose to make such information public. Your work will receive close editorial attention. If it employs facts, it will be fact-checked, so please provide sources and further readings.

In addition to the topics mentioned in our About page, we are eager to receive submissions on the following topics:

  • Original poetry (preferably metered), which you may submit as audio or video, especially if it is paired with music
  • Original philosophy touching on the real world, which could be of academic so long as it is readable to the general reader
  • Original fiction or dialogues
  • Articles on or of Plato or Shakespeare
  • Articles on or of classical Greece or the Early Modern period or the English Renaissance
  • Articles on Philosophy, especially the early modern period
  • Book reviews on the above subjects
  • Public education, in support of it, meaning away from private interests
  • Education standards
  • Standardized testing, against it, meaning it needs serious reform or dissolution
  • Literacy acquisition
  • Effective teaching practices and engaging students
  • Self education or lifelong learning
  • Civic responsibility (duty that we owe to our fellow human beings)

Please send us your work, name (optional), and general location to chimski@gmx.com. We look forward to working with you.

Please help us fund future projects.
